WHEN A SANIFLO FAILS, A WHOLE BATHROOM GOES WITH IT

Saniflo and macerator units are clever pieces of kit — they let you put a toilet, shower or basin almost anywhere in the house by pumping waste up to the main soil stack. But when they fail, the room they serve is unusable until they’re repaired. And most of them fail for the same handful of reasons, all of which are preventable or easily repaired.

DCD’s Redhill engineers know every model of Saniflo and macerator on the market. We carry the most common spares on the van, we know which units are worth repairing and which have reached the end of their economic life, and we’ll give you a straight answer either way before any work starts.

SANIFLO PROBLEMS WE SORT OUT EVERY WEEK

Most are caused by what’s been flushed — easy to prevent next time

HUMMING, NOT PUMPING

Motor running but no water moving — usually a jammed impeller from wet wipes or hygiene products.

SLOW FLUSH

Water leaves slowly or in stages — partial blockage in the macerator chamber or outlet pipe.

LEAKING FROM BASE

Water visible under or beside the unit — failed seal or cracked housing.

RUNNING CONSTANTLY

Unit cycles on and off without being used — usually a faulty microswitch or pressure sensor.

FOUL SMELL

Persistent drainage smell from the unit — usually a worn one-way valve or biofilm build-up.

TRIPPING ELECTRICS

Unit trips the consumer unit — motor failure or water ingress into the electrical compartment.

DCD'S SANIFLO SERVICE

REPAIR & SERVICE

Open the unit, clear blockages, replace worn components (impeller, microswitch, seals), descale and test. Most repairs done in 90 minutes with the right parts on hand.

FULL REPLACEMENT

When a unit is past economic repair, we install a like-for-like or upgraded replacement with new outlet pipework and proper isolation valves so future servicing is easier.

WHAT Redhill SAYS AFTER A SANIFLO Repair

Felix R. — Redhill

Saniflo had been humming for a week — we'd been managing without the downstairs loo. DCD opened it up, found a wad of wet wipes jammed in the impeller, cleared it, replaced one worn blade, full service. Back in action.

Grace M. — Redhill

Our old Saniflo had finally died. DCD talked us through repair vs replace honestly, recommended a new unit because the old one was 15 years old. New unit fitted in an afternoon, far quieter than the old one.

Hugh A. — Redhill

Saniflo kept cycling on and off randomly — driving us mad. DCD diagnosed a worn microswitch, replaced it, problem solved. Other plumbers had wanted to replace the whole unit.

Isla P. — Redhill

Smell coming from the cloakroom kept getting worse. DCD serviced the Saniflo, replaced the one-way valve and descaled the inlet pipework. Smell gone, sounds quieter too. Genuinely impressed.

SANIFLO & MACERATOR FAQS

WHY HAS MY SANIFLO STOPPED WORKING?
Most Saniflo failures fall into three categories: (1) Jammed impeller — almost always caused by wet wipes, sanitary products or paper towels being flushed; (2) Worn motor or microswitch — usually after 8–12 years of use; (3) Blocked outlet pipe — limescale and biofilm build-up over time. We diagnose which it is before quoting.
A well-maintained Saniflo typically lasts 10–15 years. Hard water areas and units that have been abused by wet-wipe flushing tend to fail sooner. Annual descaling extends the life significantly. When repair costs start approaching half the replacement cost, replacement is usually the better economic choice.
No. Despite the marketing claims, no Saniflo manufacturer (or water utility) recommends flushing ‘flushable’ wipes. They don’t break down fast enough to pass through the macerator blades cleanly and they’re the single most common cause of Saniflo failure we see in Redhill. Only toilet paper should be flushed.
Less than you’d think. We use proper PPE, plastic sheeting, and contained disposal bags. The unit can usually be opened, repaired and resealed without spilling anything. We don’t enjoy this type of work any more than you do, but we handle it cleanly and professionally.
Yes — Saniflo installations are one of our specialities. Common installations include downstairs cloakrooms with no easy soil stack access, basement bathrooms, en-suites being added to bedrooms upstairs, and garden room toilets. We’ll survey the space and recommend the right model for your setup.
Yes — Sanivite and Sanispeed greywater units in cafés, salons, offices and small commercial properties are part of our regular work. We can arrange after-hours servicing to avoid disrupting customer-facing operations and provide written maintenance records for compliance.
